During its Saturday convention, the Liberal Movement party elected Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius as it permanent chairman.
Eugenijus Gentvilas, Vitalijus Gailius and Sergej Zverev also ran for the position. Gentvilas became the first deputy chairman of the party.
Šimašius has been the acting chairman of the liberals since Eligijus Masiulis stepped down following bribery suspicions in mid-May.
“We have worked for ten years to earn people’s support and to start to work for Lithuania with full power and responsibility. And then, corruption allegations for our former leader. It hit our core strength – the idea of transparent and fair politics,” said Šimašius during the party’s convention.
“We are making serious conclusions and are changing, and we have set for ourselves requirements twice higher than before. We have already made several steps: we have a transparency hotline, we have opened the financial data and meeting agendas of public persons. We set the transparency standard,” said Šimašius.
