Lithuania’s parliament is currently deliberating on the proposal to increase the conscripts’ salaries from EUR 38 to EUR 138. Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius had even proposed to increase the salaries to EUR 238.

“This means of incentive (EUR 138 – Elta) is affordable because the planned number of draftees is not so big,” said President Grybauskaitė during her visit to Kaunas, adding that financial support to conscripts is a common practice in many foreign countries.

As reported, National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas has signed an order under which drafting in Lithuania begins on 11 May, 2015.

Volunteers will be the first ones to be drafted. If there number of volunteer conscripts is not sufficient only then male citizens aged from 19 to 26 inclusive will be drafted.
