Vilnius Airport spokeswoman Indre Baltrušaitienė told BNS that the military aircraft had been diverted to Warsaw. The German ambassador told BNS that the aircraft had not landed in Vilnius because of ice. Other planes were landing and taking off as scheduled.

A Lithuanian military spokesman said that the battalion’s commander was to come to Vilnius along with the first group of 17 troops.

Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Croatia and France will also contribute to the German-led battalion in Lithuania, which will consist of around 1,200 troops in total.

NATO last year decided station a multi-national battalion in each of the three Baltic countries and Poland in response to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and military activity in the region.
