West will not renounce Ukraine in exchange for Russia’s help with ISIS, Grybauskaitė’s adviser says

“Absolutely, not. It is clearly stated in the United Nations and here, in the corridors, that solutions for Syria must be looked for but we must definitely not forget the situation in Ukraine, and we should really preserve necessary attention to the situation in this country, Renaldas Vaisbrodas, the presidential adviser on foreign policy issues, told the Žinių Radijas news radio by phone from New York on Tuesday.

He said the Ukraine was not losing focus as “non-responded aggression in Ukraine” might lead to “unpredictable consequences in Europe and our region”.

Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea last March and a war between government forces and Russia-supported separatists soon broke out in eastern Ukraine. In response to both facts, the European Union and United States imposed sanctions against Russia.

US President Barack Obama and Russian leader Vladimir Putin met in New York on Monday but failed to resolve their disagreements on the role of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country’s future.

Earlier, they both addressed the UN General Assembly, giving conflicting speeches. Obama slammed Putin for his support to the Syrian “tyrant” who is killing children. And the Russian leader blamed America’s failed interventions in the Middle East for the rise of the Islamic State and also called on the world to support al-Assad in his fight against jihadists.
