Will Lithuania’s emigrants ever return?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed a survey indicating that 40% of Lithuanian emigrants would like to return to Lithuania.

LRT spoke to Swedbank chief economist Dr. Nerijus Mačiulis for his take on these findings, and he said “I was somewhat surprised when I saw those results. 40% is more than 200,000 Lithuanian citizens who have left the country… Just the consideration that they might return doesn’t mean that they will,” said Mačiulis.

Mačiulis said that Lithuanians living abroad understood that larger income could have consequences: larger expenses, smaller variety in life, distance from loved ones and friends, and so on.

“I don’t think that all of them can establish themselves there very successfully. That’s why they think that it will only be a temporary stage in their lives,” said Mačiulis.

He also added that we are drawing closer to the point at which emigration will match immigration. “I think this will happen by the end of this decade,” said Mačiulis.
