The deadline to submit paperwork was last Friday. Zenonas Vaigauskas, the chairman of the Commission, says that of the 19 parties that have previously expressed interest in vying for seats in the Lithuanian Seimas, 16 have presented the necessary documents by the deadline.

“Some of the parties were submitting the documents throughout Friday. Three parties did not: the Freedom Fighters Union, the Emigrant Party, and the Christian Democracy Party,” Vaigauskas is quoted by ELTA.

One party, the Lithuanian Centre Party, waited until the very last minute to complete their application, he says.

The Central Electoral Commission will now check weather the candidates have disclosed all the information as required by the law, like former convictions or foreign nationality.

Independent candidates running in single-member constituencies have until August 29 to submit 1,000 signatures from voters in the constituency. Vaigauskas says about 30 candidates are collecting signatures.

The elections to Lithuania’s Seimas are scheduled for October 9.
