40% of public procurement purchases to be ‘green’ this year

The cabinet wants to set a rule that at least 40% of all public procurement contracts this year should meet certain environmental rules. The share should grow to 45% in 2017 and to half of all purchases in 2019-2020.

In 2014, “green” contracts made up 37.3% of public procurement deals, according to the Ministry of Environment.

However, of the total €4.53 billion spent on public procurement purchases that year only 8.6% could be considered “green”.
