The official opening of the NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius is schedule for September 3. Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will also attend the ceremony.
Other NATO FIUs will be opened in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Romania.
“The activation of these military units is one of the key NATO measures in responding to new security challenges arising from the East and South,” the ministry said in a statement.
According to the National Defence Ministry, the key task for FIUs is to ensure deployment of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force and, if needed, additional rapid response forces in the Baltic region.
The Vilnius FUI is lead by Danish Colonel Jakob Sogard Larsen and Lithuanian Lieutenant Colonel Mindaugas Petkevičius serves as his deputy.
