“It is a nice example for us of a moderately-sized country that has a significant and, most importantly, conscription-based army,” President Grybauskaitė told LRT radio on Tuesday.
Switzerland spends 7 percent of its budget on defence, with 137 thousand conscripts serving in the army and 39 thousand in reserve, according to the President’s Office press release.
Lithuania is reintroducing conscription this year which has been discontinued seven years ago. Some 3,000 young men are to be called for a 9-month military training each year.
