Lithuania’s Foreign Vice-Minister Andrius Krivas expressed concern at the meeting over Belarus’ failure to provide “satisfactory answers to the questions about the safety of the Astravyets Nuclear Plant project under the environmental impact assessment stipulated in the Espoo Convention,” the Foreign Ministry said.

“I also encouraged Belarus to again consider the proposal from the Espoo Convention Implementation Committee for Lithuania and Belarus to establish a special expert commission that would help objective assessment of the environmental impact evaluation process of the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant under the Espoo Convention,” the vice-minister said in a press release.

Lithuania has repeatedly criticized Belarus for its failure to ensure safety of the nuclear utility built merely 50 km from Lithuania’s capital Vilnius. Minsk has rejected the Lithuanian accusaitons, pledging to implement top safety standards at the plant.
