The ancient Balts’ monument near the town of Gargždai close to the village of Kvietiniai was found during the exploration phase by a team of archaeologists from Vilnius and Klaipėda Universities, the Lietuvos Žinios daily reports.

The specialists are surprised by the fact an almost untouched urn with burnt human remains was found on the bottom of the barrow, which could have been up to 2,500-year-old and was destroyed in previous times.

“To discoverer a new and unknown to science barrow in western Lithuania is a rarity. There might be more remains of barrows with urns under the ground, therefore, the exploration will continue,” archaeologists Dr Gintautas Zabiela told the daily.
