The sudden freeze followed an unseasonably warm and wet December in Lithuania. Though photographers have been enjoying the opportunity to catch beautiful winter shots, others have not been as fortunate. The first recorded death from the extreme cold this winter was reported in Trakai, where a man was found frozen to death on Tuesday morning. In Poland, a cold snap dropping temperatures to -18 C took the lives of at least 21 people over the weekend.

Specialists at Lithuania’s Environmental Protection Agency indicated that smog could become a problem in Lithuania’s larger cities as the cold prompts more and more people to burn through fuel stores for warmth. Low wind forecasts for the coming week, along with the cold, promise that the particulate pollution and smog will increase.

We hope our readers stay warm this winter, and enjoy these photos of Lithuania’s cold snap while they’re at it!
