Blow to new Lithuanian conservative leader as party old-timer resigns

DELFI / Orestas Gurevičius

The internal party conflict arose due to a pamphlet that was sent before the party’s internal Seimas candidate selection process. In the pamphlet, the conservative party’s chairman, Gabrielius Landsbergis, expressed his support for 13 Seimas candidates and urged party members to support them during the internal selection process. However, most party members expected Landsbergis to remain neutral during the process, especially given his power to modify the selection once it has been made.

Landsbergis responded to criticism by saying that the brochure had used public quotes he had made and he had simply given permission to use those quotes and his photos. He indicated that he did not believe that this was not allowed or unfriendly in any way.

The 13 names he supported included Rasa Juknevičienė, Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, Aistė Gedvilienė, Vilius Semeška, Liutauras Kazlavickas, Monika Navickienė, Andrius Navickas, Vytautas Kernagis, Andrius Kubilius, Tadas Langaitis, Dainius Kreivys, Ingrida Šimonytė and Andrius Vyšniauskas.
