“After the emergence of information about the sanction issued by the municipality for the cannabis enthusiasts’ rally, prosecutors turned to the municipality with a request to provide the documents in connection to possible violations of the public interest, as in Lithuania, cannabis is listed as a narcotic substance,” Rita Stundienė, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office, told BNS on Thursday.

The protest rally is scheduled for April 20. Organizers Andrius and Mantas Ramonas maintain that their aim is to bring people together for a public discussion about the cannabis plant, Lietuvos Rytas TV said.

The organizers did not mention the decriminalization of marijuana, saying that they want to draw the public’s attention to the medical qualities of cannabis instead. They hope for 500 people to attend the event.

Remigijus Šimašius, the Mayor of Vilnius, said “I think that we shouldn’t confuse specific actions with our freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is a constitutional, fundamental principle of the function of our state, and we must all respect it. Of course, if there is any intent to commit crimes, I suggest that officers investigate and punish those guilty.”
