Opinion: The Riga Summit and its outcomes

The fourth Eastern Partnership Summit was held in Riga on 21-22 May 2015. The joint Declaration of the Riga Summit did not reaffirm either the European perspective of the Eastern European Partnership countries consistently demonstrating the best performance or the political support to Georgia and Ukraine in visa liberalization that Tbilisi and Kiev were looking forward to. Quite the opposite, compared to the Vilnius Summit document adopted two years ago, the tone and ambition of the Riga Summit declaration seemed rather weakened. […]

A very good week for President Obama

On Friday morning whilst he was preparing the eulogy for the nine murdered black people in Charleston, South Carolina, United States President Barack Obama received the last piece of good news in a week that had plenty to celebrate for the White House administration. Shortly after the the Supreme Court announcing marriage equality, President Obama issued a statement. “It’s been a significant morning. It’s been a significant couple of days. And it’s certainly been a significant month.” […]

Opinion: Lithuania does not invest into its most important ally

A visit several weeks ago by Kurt Volker, former US ambassador to NATO and currently the head of the McCain Institute, would have gone unnoticed by the Lithuanian public, if it weren’t for a few media interviews. And even if it was noticed, many must have thought it of little consequence. […]

Reading, writing and reproduction: Danish sex education includes lessons on fertility

It has gained global attention that sex education in Denmark will now focus on fertility as well as avoiding unwanted pregnancies. The background for this change is that 25 percent of couples wishing to have a baby do not achieve pregnancy within the first year. Sex education is critical to ensuring the reproductive rights of men and women wishing to avoid pregnancy as well as those that strive to achieve it. […]

Opinion: The meaning of Victory Day in Russia

On 8 May, Lithuania is joining Europe in commemorating victory over Nazism. Russia celebrates its own Victory Day on 9 May. The Germans signed the instrument of surrender in Reims, France, on 7 May 1945. It was to come into effect at 11 PM on 8 May. […]
