Co-ops the only way to make Lithuanian farming viable – minister

Forming cooperatives is the only way for Lithuania’s small farmers to survive, says Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė.

Farmers throughout Europe have been hit by small prices and even medium-sized farms are struggling to stay afloat, Baltraitienė noted on LRT programme “Dėmesio Centre”.

“I’ve always said that small farmers will only survive, if they cooperate. A person with two cows will never be competitive on his own,” according to the minister.

She says the government is drafting new laws to provide better conditions for farmers’ cooperatives.

Cooperatives will be exempt from corporate tax and subject to lower 5% VAT rate, among other measures.
