Deliberations on A. Karbauskis’ amendments on child protection system postponed

According to R. Karbauskis, the amendments would ensure that children are only taken from their families in extreme cases.

Meanwhile, the amendments are facing criticism from a number of MPs and NGOs, who believe that they would not ensure children’s safety.

According to the Lithuanian Farmer and Greens Union chairman, if his amendments were approved, children could only be taken from their families when there is a real or direct threat to the child’s health or life.

The proposal has been met with criticism from the head of the organisation Gelbėkit Vaikus [Save the Children] Rasa Dičpetrienė. According to her, the penalties could encourage to not report danger to children at all.

A number of opposition MPs describe R. Karbauskis’ proposals as populist and say that the majority itself does not have consensus because the Seimas is already discussing improvements to the law proposd by the Ministry of Social Security and Labour.
