Carrying flags of their respective nations, including Britain, the USA, NATO and even Ecuador, together with Lithuanian flags, the compact group of local Lithuania lovers walked the length of Gedimino Avenue and attracted the attention of the spectators.
The march was organized for the second year running by Vilnius City Councillor Mark Adam Harold, the first foreigner to be elected to a local government in Lithuania.
Several other rallies were held on the Independence Day last Friday, when Lithuania celebrated the 26th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union. A procession of some 3,000 people, led by the Lithuanian army’s Guard or Honour and orchestra, marched on Gedimino Avenue from the Independece Square to the Cathedral Square.
A nationalist march of about 1,000 people organized by the Union of National Youth walked on Gedimino Avenue in the opposite direction, with slogans like “Lithuania for Lithuanians” and “Proud to be Lithuanian”.
