Fighting propaganda with bans is not the best way, Lithuanian foreign minister says

“Overall, I really do not think that prohibiting something is the right way to fight propaganda, despite the fact that these are not even sources of information but more like sources of lies. However, banning will not help us solve the problem. We must create conditions for alternatives, high-quality information, so that people have options and this way we would solve the problem,” the minister told to the radio Žinių Radijas on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Radio and Television Commission of Lithuania announced that it had sufficient evidence on various irregularities committed by a Russian TV channel whose rebroadcasts in Lithuania could be banned in the near future. The channel remains unnamed. A decision is expected not earlier than on 20 June.

Previously Lithuania banned another Russian TV channel, RTR Planeta, from the country’s airwaves due to violations of information law.

Meanwhile the Ukrainian TV channel Ukraine Today will be launched in Lithuania on Thursday.
