Foreign Ministry calls for centralized institution to coordinate Lithuania’s representation abroad

The ministry says that the 40 million litas (EUR 11.6m) is currently spend in an uncoordinated and inefficient manner, as different institutions spend the money at their own discretion, and the large projects, such as EXPO, book and tourism fairs, international conferences are carried out separately and in line with the vision and professionalism of the staff.

The proposal was last week discussed at the government’s Strategic Committee, which confined itself to a decision to set up an interinstitutional task force for the matter. After the meeting, the ministry expressed “regret over the lack of political will to take a responsible stance on the money that is already spent on presenting the country”.

Under the ministry’s proposal, the new institute should be established on the basis of the International Centre for Cultural Programs under the Ministry of Culture with additional jobs and financing from other institutions that also work in representing Lithuania abroad.
