The cultural heritage council can only submit a recommendation. If they suggest crossing out the statues from the list of protected objects, the minister of culture should make the final decision. Besides, the experts’ decision could be appealed within three months of its publication.

In the summer of 2015, the sculptures that had stood on the Green Bridge in central Vilnius for more than 60 years were removed because they were in poor condition. Opponents of their removal claimed that the statues were essential elements of the bridge’s design and claimed that the move was simply a populist move by the city government. After being removed from the bridge, they were secured for safekeeping in a municipal lot.

Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius has repeatedly indicated he was not planning to put the statues back on the bridge.
