The move comes as the parliament and the ruling coalition are considering how to restrict the marketing of alcohol and a raft of other measures to combat alcoholism.
“Finally, the problem got the attention it deserved. Now we can all contribute to the fact that people will be more sober. Authorities should work with the families, at all levels – from the smallest to the largest,” said Eglė Mačionienė, the head of Lazdijai education centre.
Seventeen district educational institutions’ communities requested a prohibition on the sale of alcohol near schools and kindergartens.
Lazdijai district leaders say that the decision to restrict the marketing of alcohol may have to be reviewed in the near future as the municipality received new requests from parishes and houses of worship to restrict alcohol trade near them also.
