“The aim of the meeting was to convince Italian officials to allow our officers to take part in interviews of foreigners. They would not allow this until now and their argument was that this was against their legislation and that we had to trust information gathered by Italian officials,” Misiunas told BNS by phone from Italy after meeting with Minniti.
“But we had our arguments and we managed to reach a deal. The minister promised that we would be able to sign an agreement regarding such interviews,” he said.
Lithuania has pledged to take in a total of 1,105 refugees from such countries as Syria, Iraq or Eritrea under the EU resettlement program by next fall. A total of 309 migrants have been relocated so far. According to the latest figures, 230 refugees have already left Lithuania. The country ranks fifth in the EU by the refugee resettlement rate.
