Lithuania must get ready for dual citizenship referendum, parliament speaker says

DELFI / Audrius Solominas

“All political groups agree that members of parliament should discuss the issue in detail and prepare for a referendum that will ask the nation a question about citizenship,” said the parliamentary speaker.

At the same time, she said that ensuring the correct wording of the referendum question was very important.

“We must prepare for the referendum, make things clear to the people and formulate question in the right manner. The answer will depend on the question we ask. First of all, we must formulate the objective that we seek, all agree on the objective and seek it in a consistent way by talking to people,” Graužinienė noted.

Lithuania’s Constitution currently allows dual citizenship in exceptional cases only, with a strict doctrine on the matter formulated by the Constitutional Court as well.
