In Lithuania, the judge is proposed by the government with approval from the president and following consultations with the parliament.

The EU General Court consists of one judge nominated by each of the EU member-states. They are appointed for a six-year term. Currently, Lithuania is represented by Egidijus Bieliūnas at the General Court.

Valančius would start his six-year term at the EU General Court in the autumn of 2015, if EU institutions make the final decision on the court’s reforms and increase of the number of judges. If the reform is endorsed, each country will be represented by two judges.

Valančius currently heads the EU project on justice sector reforms in Ukraine. In 2002-2013, he was a judge at the Lithuanian Supreme Administrative Court and served as a judge at the Court of Appeals in 1995-2002.
