Lithuania was ranked the 17th most influential country in Europe by Politco. The most influential countries within the European Union were Germany, Great Britain, France and Italy. Turkey came in 5th, since the rankings also considered candidate states.
The high position was based on Turkey’s “standing invitation” to EU summits and its pivotal role in the refugee deal.
Finland received 12th place, Lithuania received 17th, Estonia received 21st, and Latvia received 24th. In its explanation of Lithuania’s position, Politico wrote, “One pairing where president and ambassador are really in sync. Dalia Grybauskaitė is lauded for her openness and toughness.”
According to the rankings, the least influential countries were Romania (27th), Bulgaria (28th), Luxembourg (29th), Croatia (30th), Montenegro (31st) and Macedonia (32nd).
