“The author, who lives and writes in the US, received the award for her latest novel, Salt to the Sea, which was published in 2016. It has been ranked as a number one bestseller by the New York Times,” it said in a press release.
The novel, which was translated into Lithuanian last year, follows the fates of four young people — a Lithuanian, a Pole and two Germans — trying to flee the advancing Soviet army in the winter of 1945.
“This award confirms that through characters and story, historical statistics become human,” Sepetys was quoted as saying in the press release.
The writer was born in 1967. Her books have been published in more than 50 countries and translated into 36 different languages.
