The drills will be conducted at the former Kalvarija and Lazdijai border checkpoints, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, or VSAT, said.

Border guards will randomly check people, vehicles and items entering Lithuania between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The exercise is aimed at improving the skills of reintroducing internal border controls, as well as interoperability with the police and other bodies, and the Polish Border Guard Service, VSAT said.

It noted that travellers must have a passport or ID card with them while traveling within the Schengen area.

Under Schengen rules, member states are permitted to reintroduce temporary border controls where a threat to public policy or national security has been identified.
