Lithuanian culture minister: We must defend our identity, not only territory

“The main value is our culture, our civilization, our identity and this is what we actually defend. All the rest – power plants, roads, ports – we can have in the empire too,” the minister said during a conference held in the president’s office on Friday.

According to Minister Birutis, the recent discussions mostly focus on the “hard” aspect of the national defence strengthening, i.e. military equipment purchase, increase of troops, however, the aspect of promoting citizens’ awareness, confidence in the state and self-confidence has been forgotten.

“Small nations must realise that without enhancing their identity and confidence in the state no costs for purchase of equipment will ever help. If one’s trust in the state and defence of the state are part of one’s identity then hours do not matter at all. No one will ever be able to conquer such a country and its citizens,” the minister stressed.
