“Such a proposal is absolutely rational. Our consul is now working on this matter, and we are in contact with Suwalki municipality on the provision of premises,” Matulionis told BNS Lithuania. “We will try to mediate as much as possible for it to become a reality, and we’ll speak with the Polish government institutions.”

According to Matulionis, there’s a clear need for a Lithuanian kindergarten in Suwalki and the need for a school stills needs to be determined.

If such a center was opened, it could be supported by the Lithuanian Ministries of Culture, Education and Foreign Affairs, the vice chancellor said.

Jolanta Malinauskaitė-Vektorienė, chairwoman of the Lithuanian community in Poland, told the Lietuvos Žinios daily that many Lithuanian families are moving to Suwalki from Punsk and Sejny.

Suwalki was an important center of Lithuanian culture in the XIX century but thousands of Lithuanians were deported from the city during WWII.
