The influential Lithuanian human rights activists had accepted Russian Ambassador Alexander Udaltsov’s invitation to the discussion.
Meanwhile their colleagues and political scientists criticize their visit to Russia‘s diplomatic representation, saying that public figures are being involved in Moscow’s propaganda war.
Budnikas said the discussion mainly focused on human rights and problems in this area not only in Ukraine but also in Lithuania and other EU member states. The Lithuanian human rights activists got particularly interested in the Russian ambassador’s invitation to visit the camps of refugees from Donetsk and Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine.
The Russian Embassy in Lithuania has been sending letters to Lithuania’s human rights organizations for some time already. Dovilė Šakalienė, director of the Lithuanian Human Rights Monitoring Institute, says the institute has received three letters since May. In one of the letters, Russia demands that Lithuania investigate human rights violations in Ukraine.
“It seems absurd when they send pictures of young Ukrainians allegedly taking part in Nazi marches. It’s obviously an example of very poor and primitive propaganda and slander,” she said.
