Lithuanian knights take top spots at medieval tournament in Kaunas

One of the most important aspects of the celebration is the international knights’ tournaments to win the sword of the Lithuanian army. The top three spots this year were claimed by Lithuanians.

Tomas Kazlauskas, who took first place, spent eight years preparing for the final and fought wearing 30kg of armor. “It’s the first time I took first place. This is a huge accomplishment for me, after so much sweat spilled in the gym, and it was nice to see my wife’s support as well,” he said.

The winner of the tournament receives a sword produced according to a 13th-century Lithuanian sword held in the Vytautas the Great War Museum in Kaunas.

Artūras, who took second place, received a battle axe, and Karolis, who took third place, received a battle knife. The three-day tournament included knights from Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Belarus. This is the third year in a row that the competition is won by Lithuanians.

“It was great that not only Lithuanians participated. There are strong men from all around – Lithuania and other states. There were very nice battles, very powerful battles and very professional fighters,” said Air Force Col. Audronis Navickas.
