“I evaluate this very negatively. Even if it was a mistake, which I doubt, we could resolve this issue absolutely other ways,” the prime minister told BNS on Friday, having diplomatic ways in mind.

“Interstate issues should not be resolved this way, even if there are some problems. It’s a demonstration of certain anger, certain hatred. Or it’s a wish to demonstrate certain power,” the prime minister said.

He also said he has already discussed the incident with Agriculture Minister Virginija Baltraitienė who has asked Russian services for additional information on why the Lithuanian vessel was detained.

The Russian ambassador was also summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier on Friday in response to the detention of the Lithuanian fishing vessel Jūrų Vilkas (Sea Wolf). Lithuania claims physical force was used against the vessel’s captain, a Lithuanian citizen.
