“Our main goal is to ascertain and accept only those people who do not pose a threat to national or internal security. Once refugees are accommodated, police and other institutions under the Ministry of the Interior will need to focus on public order more,” the prime minister told the national radio on Tuesday.
Based on agreements with other European Union (EU) member states, in the next two years Lithuania will have to receive 325 refugees from Syria, Eritrea and other countries. They will be accommodated at the Refugee Reception Centre in Rukla.
Based on the data of the International Organisation for Migration, this year over 250,000 people arrived to Europe from problematic areas. Around 2,300 migrants died in the Mediterranean Sea trying to cross it and illegally enter the EU.
