Lithuanian law requires tax changes to be announced at least six months before they come into force.

“We’ll be ready to look through everything on Friday, at least that package of five laws. I myself will take part in this on Saturday and I will myself look through the laws as well,” the president said in an interview with LRT Radio aired on Thursday.

“If everything is in order, I’ll sign these five laws on Saturday so that they can come into force on January 1 next year,” she added.

The government says that the reform aims to reduce the labor tax burden on people. Critics say, however, that the changes fail to address the fundamental problem of high social inequality.

The Seimas is expected to pass the tax reform package on Thursday.
