Lithuanian Seimas opposition to pursue deputy speaker seat

“The political group’s position is crystal clear – based on the Seimas statute, there have to be at least two deputy speakers representing the Opposition. We do not regard Jaroslav Narkevič (member of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania party which recently quit the ruling coalition – ELTA) as a deputy who represents the Opposition. He was not delegated by the Opposition, therefore, liberal and conservative parliamentary parties will hold a joint meeting to make a decision whom to nominate as deputy speaker of the Seimas,” said Masiulis.

The Seimas statute stipulates that the parliament speaker can have no more than seven deputies. Currently Graužinienė has six. One position remains vacant after liberal Petras Auštrevičius was elected to the European Parliament and left the Seimas.

Deputy Speaker Jaroslav Narkevič represents the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania party which withdrew from the ruling coalition.
