Lithuanians, Belarusians could have closer ties – PM

“I do believe the development of economic and cultural ties with neighbouring Belarus could become the basis for closer communication between citizens of our countries,” Butkevičius said in the letter.

Lithuania and Belarus “have diverse ties, therefore, we need to seek making this cooperation equal, constructive and mutually beneficial,” the Lithuanian prime minister said.

Belarus celebrates Independence Day on July 3 to mark the liberation of Minsk from the Nazis by the Soviet Red Army in 1944. The country used to celebrate Independence Day on July 27 to mark the declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 but the date was changed in a controversial referendum in 1996, backed by President Alexander Lukashenko.
