Marijuana rally in front of the parliament

Marijuana enthusiasts gathered at a rally outside the Lithuania Parliament organized by the Green Ring Society yesterday.

“Lithuania is a free country and everyone has the right to freely express views and beliefs. I think that there should be no confusion between specific actions and freedom of expression. Freedom of speech is a constitutional, fundamental principle of a state and we all have to respect it. Of course, if someone plans to commit a crime, I would want officials to investigate it and punish the culprits. But again, no one has the right in a democratic state to limit freedom of expression,” said Vilnius mayor Remigijus Šimašius.

The rally organizers are two brothers Andrius Ramonas and Mantas Ramonas who said their goal was to bring people together and encourage public discussion about the cannabis plant.

“The date for the event was chosen not by chance, it coincides with the UNGASS (United Nations General Assembly Special Session) taking place on April 19-21, during which narcotics security and control guidelines will be reviewed,” said Andrius Ramonas.
