Married men to become diacons for 1st time in Lithuania

All in all, five men will be ordained as deacons, including Darius Chmieliauskas, a father of five who heads the Information Service at the Kaunas Archdiocese. As permanent deacons, the men will have the right to preach, baptise, bury, marry and prepare believers for sacraments, however, will not be able to hear confessions, hold church services and anoint the sick.

The five new deacons are required to have jobs and income for their families to be able to e ngage in the deacon activities with their family and work commitments.

Three of the deacons will be assigned to Kaunas parishes and institutions, while the remaining two will serve in the Lithuanian army’s chaplaincy.
