“The Alliance asks questions to Russia about the character, scale, locations and scenario of the exercise, as well as whether some of the units will stay in Belarus or Kaliningrad after the training,” Leškevičius told BNS in a telephone interview from Brussels.

In his words, NATO also inquired about invitation of observers, however, did not receive clear answers.

NATO, in its turn, provided Russia with information about the Trident Javelin 2017 exercise planned to take place in Norway, voicing an expectation for the same type of transparency from Moscow, said Leškevičius.

Lithuania’s military intelligence says that the Zapad scenario will simulate an armed conflict with NATO and warns about possible provocations in the border area during the war games.

Belarus pledged on Thursday to invite military observers from international organizations and neighboring states to observe the exercise.

In Leškevičius’ words, the meeting of the NATO-Russia Council on Thursday also addressed the situation in Ukraine and Afghanistan.
