On 17 August NATO fighters scrambled to intercept an IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft of the Russian Federation which had a flight plan pre-filed, was not using its on-board transponder but maintained communication with air traffic control centres. The other intercepted aircraft was an IL-18 transport jetliner of the Russian Federation that also had a pre-filed flight plan, had its on-board transponder switched on and maintained radio communication with air traffic control centres.
