Three of these scrambles were to intercept Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft and an Il-76 transport plane and two were to intercept Tu-134 passenger aircraft and Su-27 escort fighters.

Many of the Russian aircraft had their automatic transponders switched off.

NATO’s Baltic air-policing mission is conducted from Lithuania and Estonia.
