DELFI / Mindaugas Ažušilis

The newly-published documents reflect the activities of KGB’s intelligence unit in the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic and the KGB 2nd Board.

Some of the documents reveal cooperation between the Central Committee of the Lithuanian Communist Party and KGB.

They show that KGB informed the Central Committee on a regular basis about the activities of Lithuanian émigré organizations, such as the Supreme Committee for the Liberation of Lithuania and the American Lithuanian Council, etc., and their perceived threats to the Soviet regime.

There also KGB documents concerning the then newly elected Pope John Paul II, the activities of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science and preparations by Lithuanian nationalist organizations abroad to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the baptism of Lithuania.
