Last year, more than 120,000 employees in Lithuania earned less than the minimum wage. This year, the numbers have dropped to around 100,000.
Employers are regularly inspected by the State Tax Inspectorate, State Social Insurance Fund Board Sodra and labour inspectors. Nearly 4,000 heads of companies had to fill out questionnaires, which sought to find out whether the company can increase the salaries of their employees.
The Tax Inspectorate, Sodra and the Labour Inspectorate say there are already some positive developments. According to statistics, the average salary in all the inspected companies grew 15-17%, while all salaries grew on average 7% last year.
Moreover, tax authoritues say they managed to pull €68 million out of the black market this way, resulting in €27 million in additional tax money.
