“After returning from Brussels, I felt awkward to hear the thoughts,” the PM said in an interview broadcast on the national television LRT on Tuesday evening.
During the visit in Brussels on Monday, the prime minister and the agriculture minister submitted an application for 32 million euros in support for partial compensation of the losses that have accumulated over the first eight months of this year. If the situation remains unchanged, Lithuania intends to ask for further 18 million euros for the remaining four months.
In Butkevičius’ words, “the meeting with the European commissioner in charge of agriculture was a high-level conversation – constructive and business-like.”
On Monday, President Dalia Grybauskaitė said the sum requested by the government was “unlikely.”
The government says that the Russian embargo and the current milk prices “lead to the sector’s collapse.”
