PM plans to return to discussions on political party funding model

Mečys Laurinkus, a former head of the State Security Department, has proposed reintroducing an earlier model that allowed businesses to finance political parties.

Skvernelis said in an interview with LRT Radio on Tuesday that Laurinkus’ proposal might be discussed.

“It (the model) was scrapped as a potentially non-transparent instrument. But Mečys Laurinkus’ position has its supporters, because at that time we could see officially what legal entity supported what political force,” the prime minister said.

“I believe we’ll definitely return to these discussions and we’ll have to look for a better funding model than the one currently in place,” he added.

Donations to political parties by businesses and private individuals have been banned since 2012 when state subsidies were introduced. The amendment was initiated by President Dalia Grybauskaitė. The ban on support by individuals was later relaxed to allow donations during political campaigns, but with certain restrictions.
