NATO plans to discuss how to better prepare local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq and coordinate the fight the Islamic State group.
The Alliance’s member states are also expected to renew their pledge to gradually increase their defense spending to 2 percent of GDP. Lithuania aims to achieve this target next year.
Eastern European countries last year were worried by Donald Trump‘ presidential election campaign statements that NATO was “obsolete” and that he would look at whether US allies in the Alliance were fulfilling their obligations before deciding whether to come to their defense.
Trump has softened his rhetoric about NATO since becoming US president.
