The president has not confirmed the information which emerged in the Financial Times that the Baltic states, including Lithuania, has blocked the candidacy of the Italian Foreign Minister Frederica Mogherani as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
According to Grybauskaitė, such decision has not been reached yet and will only be discussed on Wednesday. She said that Lithuania will present its opinion on all candidates then (during the European Council in Brussels on Wednesday – ELTA).
Grybauskaitė said that the candidate “should at least attempt to be neutral on separate opinions and coordinate the common opinion; and not to maintain a narrow or very controversial position regarding Ukraine”.
The president did not speculate whether the EU will apply economic sanctions against Russia. Ostensibly “the sanction package has been prepared” but its application will depend “on how the situation is evaluated”.
“I cannot guarantee that one or another sectors will be included in the list,” Grybauskaitė said.
