At 8 AM 13 January, the Day of Freedom Defenders, candles will be lit in windows of buildings across Lithuania for ten minutes.
“By lighting memorial candles, we remember those who fought for Lithuania and died for its freedom. Let us remember everyone who taught us to cherish and safeguard our homeland. Let candles light all Lithuania and grant us strength, bravery and unity,” said President Dalia Grybauskaitė, the patron of the initiative.
The International Commission has organised this civic campaign every year since 2008. It is an integral part of the Teaching about the Crimes of Totalitarian Regimes, Prevention of Crimes against Humanity and Tolerance Education Programme.
