President signs citizenship amendments into law

DELFI / Šarūnas Mažeika

The amendments to the Law on Citizenship were proposed by the president herself and adopted by the Seimas on 22 December 2015.

Under the law, the president will decide on granting or restoring Lithuanian citizenship after examining a person’s application and their claimed merits on a case-by-case basis.

The Constitutional Court had ruled that merit to the Lithuanian state consists of activities with which an individual is significantly contributing to the strengthening of the country’s statehood, power and international authority.

Lithuania’s citizenship laws do not allow dual citizenship, save for limited exemptions specified in laws.
